Purple-striped Jellyfish

Chrysaora colorata

A gorgeous species of sea nettle from the American west coast.  Purple-stripes have several distinct color phases during their development. Like most nettles, they start out clear as juveniles. They then turn a pinkish color, eventually forming reddish pink stripes. These stripes mature into a deep royal purple and the bell turns white. Each stage is strikingly beautiful. A large species of nettle, adults can reach up to 3 feet in diameter.

Caring for Purple-Striped Jellyfish

Purple-Striped Jellies are a moderately sensitive species of Sea Nettle. They tend to take a little bit of time to settle into a new aquarium but are fairly hardy after that.

Stocking density: In addition to having long tentacles, Purple-stripes have long and flat arms. They should be stocked at a low density to avoid tangling.

Flow: Medium- High, flow should be set enough to where the sea nettles are actively swimming against the current but not being pushed around the aquarium.

Feeding: A mixed diet should be offered to meet their nutritional requirements. Live baby brine shrimp, chopped Mysis shrimp and Jellyfish pellets are good options.

Temperature Range:  60-68 F

Salinity: 1.026/ 35 ppt

Compatibility with other species: Purple-stripes are compatible with Black Sea Nettles but will sting or eat other species of jellyfish.
